Charlie Kaplan's large-scale marble sculpture Soaring is being acquired by the American Jewish University in Los Angeles. His work will be added to the growing and dynamic sculpture collection in the Smalley Sculpture Garden, alongside such luminaries as Anthony Caro, Jenny Holzer, Sol Lewitt, George Rickey and Benar Venet. The formal installation will occur in 2022.
An 80-page full color catalogue accompanied the gallery's exhibition, a celebration of large-scale works by 12 international sculptors. As stated “…(sculptors) see in 3-D. They see positive and negative space. They feel curves and see how light reflects and refracts.”
Long-Sharp Gallery presented its first major large-scale sculpture exhibition in Indianapolis. Sculpture of Scale as part of the gallery’s SCULPT program. The exhibit included works by 12 contemporary sculptors from across the globe, including Charlie Kaplan (California & Italy), Tarik Currimbhoy (India & New York), Patrick Hurst ((UK), Jason Myers (Indiana & The Netherlands), and Cha Jong Rae (S. Korea). A fully illustrated catalogue accompanied the exhibition.

Long-Sharp Gallery hosted an exhibition of nearly a dozen marble works created by sculptor Charlie Kaplan at its New York location. The exhibition, CONTOURS, celebrates the recent acquisition of Kaplan's Soaring (2018) by the William and Anita Newman Library at Baruch College, CUNY.
Following what has become the artist’s annual showing at the CIBART Festival in Northern Tuscany, Kaplan’s exhibition featured works ranging in artistic effect from the startling luminosity seen in Carrara Statuario marble (Unfolding, 2016) to the incomparable luster of noir belge (seen in Black Ghost, 2006).

Curving like mountains or waves, Charlie Kaplan’s sculptures echo the organic forms of nature. His work appears monumental whether it’s massive like Soaring, which rises nine feet, or much smaller like Black Slice, which is only 28 inches high. The marble, Kaplan’s favored material, imparts a timeless quality to his sculptures. It also provides a natural color that adds a unique beauty and a specific identity to each piece. As Kaplan, himself, explains, “My ideas come from the stone.” Because he carves directly, without a sketch as a guide, Kaplan is responding to the individual characteristics of each piece of stone, almost like he would to a spoken command. The stone is speaking to him, and he is following its imperatives.
Charlie Kaplan was present for the installation ceremony of his 2018 sculpture, Soaring, at Baruch College, The City University of New York. The sculpture made of Bianco Puro Carrara marble was placed at the entrance of Baruch College’s Newman Library for students, faculty and staff to encounter and enjoy. In September 2018, Charlie Kaplan had his first New York institutional solo exhibition at Baruch College’s Mishkin Gallery, which featured Soaring, as well as a representation of smaller-scale works in stone.
Baruch College’s Sidney Mishkin Gallery presents the exhibition Pleasing Curves: Sculpture by Charlie Kaplan, featuring seven works by the Los Angeles-based artist. The exhibition will run from Friday, September 28 to Friday, October 26, 2018. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Charlie Kaplan studied welding, blacksmithing, and he worked in clay, wood, and other media before being introduced to marble. Over the course of several years he studied in Pietrasanta, Italy—just ten miles from Carrara—where he developed a deep knowledge of the material, learning about the various types of marble, as well as honing his skill in bronze casting.
Noguchi wrote, “Stone itself is a symbol of the natural world and the sculptor’s engagement with stone is a metaphor for human existence.” Noguchi was fascinated with the historical and modern techniques of working with stone. Contemporary sculptor Charlie Kaplan leads this workshop, bringing his decades long experience as a stone carver. Participants will join Kaplan in the galleries, discussing Noguchi’s materials and processes, and then learn introductory hand carving techniques for creating their own stone sculptures in the studio.
The Museo Gigi Guadagnucci, in Massa-Carrara, Tuscany, presented a solo exhibition of early marble sculptures by Charlie Kaplan as part of its mission to showcase contemporary artists of international acclaim. Kaplan is the only Amerian artist to receive this honor. The accompanying catalogue, featured essays by Massimo Bertozzi and Annette Rose-Shapiro. As Ms. Rose Shapiro states “Kaplan’s artistry …can be summed up in the words of Lao-Tze who advised that to be strong one must stand like a mountain and flow like a great river. Kaplan’s work embodies that very ideal.”
Catalogue with essay by Christopher Eamon documents Kaplan’s work from 2009 through 2013. In his essay Material Seduction, Eamon states “Kaplan’s sculpture…is neither completely abstract nor definitively representational, a fact that links it to this formative time.”
Charlie Kaplan’s monumental sculpture Flight was exhibited on the newly designed public pier in Pietrasanta. Selected by a jury of arts professionals and city leaders, it was also chosen to be included on the cover of the official tourism brochure for the area.
Drawn from a collection of works Kaplan created in a 24-year period, the show concentrates on sculptures that fuse his signature biomorphic forms with a soulful modernist style. The majority of works in the exhibition are sculpted from Carrara marble with additional pieces carved from alabaster, Belgian black marble, Rosso Laguna marble and Bianco Puro Carrara marble. A selection of bronze and stainless steel sculptures are also included.

These luxurious materials are transformed into sparse silhouettes that express a primal state, where sensuality and sexuality, are celebrated within a single monolith.
Charlie Kaplan's path to sculpting marble began with an interest in hand tools. A natural ability in shop class in high school, a passion for collecting vintage tools, a reader of the history of technology, and a knack for being a handyman around the house meant that as a 24 year old, recently married college graduate living in an apartment in West Hollywood in 1968, he would have a set of new chisels.
