Charlie Kaplan sculpture held aloft by winners of Legends Regatta, Ocean Race 2023, Genoa, Italy

Charlie Kaplan has always loved the ocean, sailing when he was younger and living near the water most of his life, whether in California or Pietrasanta. When the opportunity arose to use his artistic talent to support the fiftieth anniversary of Ocean Race 2023, he was thrilled. Renowned as one of the most exalted round the world yacht races, The Oceans Race ended with much excitement in Genoa, Italy.  To celebrate it’s long and storied history, Oceans Races this year featured the Legends Regatta, a special race among 7 legendary yachts from the past.

Charlie Kaplan’s elegant and symbolic sculpture Sailing Together was chosen as the prize for the winner of Legends Regatta. The sculpture is meaningful on many levels – it is an homage to sailing freely, the two sail-like structures facing each other in harmony and grace. It is also a metaphor for the artist’s wish that humanity could sail together, minimizing our differences and celebrating our similarities.

The official ceremony was held on June 27, with the presentation of Charlie’s sculpture by Genoa Mayor Marco Bucci to the winning Austrian boat E1 Ericsson, guided by Johannes Schwarz. It was a memorable day, and a great honor for Kaplan to be such an integral part of the 50th anniversary celebration.
